Innsbruck’s Stadtturm
The City Tower
Rising up at 51 meters, Innsbruck’s Stadtturm was built between 1442 and 1450 as an extension of the former City Hall and to this day it ranks among the town’s most important historical landmarks, together with the Goldenes Dachl.

Found on Herzof-Friedrich-Strasse, directly opposite the Goldenes Dachl, the City Tower was built on the former City Hall to enable the tower guards to keep watch over the city, look out for enemies, and keep peace at night.

The construction of Innsbruck’s City Tower expressed the growing self-confidence of the medieval bourgeouisie, giving a clear signal to everyone of its preparedness to defend its rights and interests.
Its central location on the main square of the city’s historic Altstadt, has made the Innsbruck’s City Tower an eye-witness to numerous significant events.
It has seen traditional markets, ambitious games and prestigious events, but also gruesome scenes and public executions.

For many centuries, Innsbruck’s historic City Hall was home to the town’s city council and the focal point of the citizen’s political activities.

As a consequence, the City Tower turned into the symbolic center of the medieval town, representing a certain counterweight to the nearby Imperial Palace, seat of the country’s aristocratic sovereigns.

Today, the tower is topped with a bulbous dome and the viewing platform at 31 meters, offers spectacular views over the roofs and Baroque spires of the Altstadt as well as to the Nordkette mountains in the Alps lying to the north.
